The project seeks to investigate an urbanity that youth produce on the move - through short- and long-term mobilities.  Over the next nine months, the project will focus on observing emerging socio-spatial practices of youth in African and Asian contexts, and examine their modes of moving and meaning-making through an embodied politics of performance. 

Youth on the Move and HAB first collaborated in 2024, co-organising the Youth Cartographies methodologies workshop alongside the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP). This workshop brought together urban practitioners and scholars focused on geographies of young people’s aspirations and anxieties to share their experience of engagement with youth. 

Building off this, YOTM organised The Waiting Room during ICAS 13 in Surabaya, an exhibition that collected 50 stories of youth across Africa-Asia and metaphorically indexing practices and subjectivities through which the urban youth perform the politics of living within the global south. In conjunction with The Waiting Room, YOTM also hosted the Linger Longer roundtable, where scholars and artists engaged in discussions investigating Southern urbanities that youth produce on the move - through short - and long-term mobilities in/across the radically changing urban spaces. The roundtable incorporated the exhibition by hosting a performance story by Nigerian and Indonesian artists, the outcome of exchanges in Surabaya and inspiration from the various practices of youth across the global south.
