French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP)
The French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP), UMIFRE 21 CNRS-MAE, is a financially autonomous institution under the joint supervision of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) and the French National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS). It is a part of the network of 27 research centres under this Ministry. It also forms part of the research unit 3330 “Savoirs et Mondes Indiens” of the CNRS, along with the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH) in New Delhi. It fulfils its missions of research, expertise and training in Human and Social Sciences and Ecology in South Asia. It works particularly in the fields of Indian cultural knowledge and heritage (Sanskrit language and literature, history of religions, Tamil studies), contemporary social dynamics and the natural ecosystems of South India.
In 2019, IFP scholars were invited to a storytelling and writing workshop organized by HAB and hosted by the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Chennai. This was followed by participation of HAB at IFP's Social Sciences Winter School on "Heritage, Communities, Sustainability" in 2019 and again in December 2022 where HAB and MIDS co-conducted the workshop "Interrogating and Narrating Inequalities – Youth Anxieties and Aspirations in India Today". The annual Local Food Systems Festival organized by the Social Sciences department is another area of collaboration with HAB.
In January 2023, IFP signed an MOU with IIAS and joined the HAB network of collaborating institutions. In March 2023, HAB and IFP co-organised a writing workshop titled "Writing without Fear", which provided young Humanities and Social Science scholars, at IFP, Pondicherry University and Chennai, the opportunity to develop their writing practice through exercises in creative nonfiction. Other workshops conducted include the 2024 "Youth Cartographies" methodologies workshop, where participants included HAB partners from AIIOC Surabaya, Indonesia, Ambedkar University Delhi, Max Weber Forum Delhi, MIDS, Chennai, the Srishti Mahe University, Bangalore and the Youth on the Move (YOTM) network.
IFP's collaboration with HAB is ongoing in the form of a book project following the successful roundtable organized by Barbara Curda, titled Knowhow, under the Gatrodi project of the IFP. The volume titled "Knowhow in a Shifting World" is being co-edited by former IFP scholars Barbara Curda, Nicolas Bautes and former IIAS fellow Aryo Danusiri under the "Humanities Across Borders: A Methodologies Book Series".
Another fruitful collaboration between IFP and HAB is the research and co-publication of the Words from Jawadhu Hills, a wordbook focusing on the words and lives of millet farmers in Jawadhu Hills, Eastern Ghats, South India.
