Reading Leiden: An Experiential School is the first in the three schools planned by the Humanities across Borders Program, International Institute of Asian Studies. Over the course of five-days of the school in July 2019, the participants will explore and understand Leiden by discovering its history, its development as a university town, its planned social housing, changing demographics and spoken languages, its textile past, art and hidden craft. These explorations will be made through three themes of Neighbourhood, Craft Practice, Words/Stories.

The aim of the school is to test the socially embedded pedagogies being developed and encouraged by the HaB program vis-à-vis its projects in parts of West Africa and Asia, like walkabouts, digital storytelling, object itineraries, photo- voice, a-day-in-the-life diaries and others.

The themes around which the activities are organized for the five days are:  

July 11: Town and Gown

July 12: Craft Practice

July 13: Storytelling

July 14: Preparation and Walk around Leiden

July 15: Built Environment

Expected Outcome

Leiden is the site of learning, exploring, researching and testing for the summer school. The participants will be collecting a variety of data about the city of Leiden such as snippets of interviews and street sounds, photographs, your own diary notes, etc. At the end of the day, each group will come together to assess the materials and information thus gathered. Materials will be uploaded on the HaB Accession Card that will help build the story of Leiden.

On July 16, 2019, the two Roundtable sessions Digital Storytelling Workshops 1 and 2: Humanities across Borders Archive in the Making, will be occasions to process this data into a meaningful story for presentation as the final outcome of the school.

These stories will be shared at a public roundtable on July 19, 2019 in Reading Leiden: Some Insights from the Humanities across Borders School.
