The Knowledge House for Craft (KHC)
The Knowledge House for Craft (KHC) is an association of craft scholars, practitioners, and designers with a shared interest in re-centring the role of craft in the contemporary world of techno-economic intensification, and alienation, through the building of a dynamic repository of geographically and culturally diverse understandings of human making.
Craft is an essential part of human life. It is a global practice that takes on different forms and values in different cultures, and encourages a dialogue between them. It is constantly evolving, and as a lens for understanding our changing world, it must be acknowledged as part of our daily life to keep alive its value, relevance and know-how.
The KHC moves forward with the following principles: Those actively involved should have a voice, including the makers and users. We need to think ethically about knowledge and the rights of those who sustain it. We need to think critically about the narratives and ideals craft has served, what is done in their name, and who these narratives empower or suppress. There is much to be gained by having a common store of knowledge about craft. Robust debate within the crafts can help build a stronger case for its importance. There are no universal definitions: there is much to be gained from comparisons between cultures in how they define and value craft.
Since 2024, the Knowledge House for Craft has collaborated alongside HAB, their most recent collaboration being part of the ICAS 13 conference-festival proceedings. The first was a Knowledge House for Craft (KHC) Roundtable, where board members of the KHC came together for the first time to share their ongoing dialogue on craft with members of the HAB network. Alongside this roundtable, was the Craftvoice Exhibition, a trans-local assemblage of stories of making, learning, and using that presented a humanistic perspective of craft centred around the voices of makers and their connections with people, materials, places, environments and technologies. The exhibitors for Craftvoice were a mixture of KHC board members and HAB partners.
