The whole Naga struggle, it is purely because of the invasion by India...this here is our land, this is ours. The coming of the English language too has given us new terms to describe us, including the word “indigenous” which itself is a way of saying that we are under India and it distorted our definition of who we are. After the British invasion, India too thought of us as a weak people and that it has a sense of ownership over us that led to the making of the state. It was an opportunity for Nehru to show a backup plan by giving us statehood which we didn’t ask for. The labelling of the Nagas as tribes itself is a way of keeping us under India. We are not a tribe but a nation.

The Naga National Council (NNC) was formed in the late 1940s and later under the leadership of Angami Zapu Phizo (knows as "the father of the Nagas"); it unsuccessfully campaigned for an independent Naga nation by seceding from the Indian state. Phizo later formed the “People’s Sovereign Republic of Free Nagaland “in 1954 reorganising the NNC setup as hopes of a peaceful settlement diminished. Nagaland was formed as a state in the Union of India in 1963 and the secessionist movement slowly waned away.

Adinno Phizo, the daughter of Angami Zapu Phizo, is the current President of the NNC.
